Thank you for coming to the EnterLV.com blog; featuring Musikstry Notes, a continuing article series sponsored by Petra-Productions.com. Petra Productions is the leading Christian Production company in Las Vegas and continues to bring the best in Christian Entertainment throughout the Vegas Valley.
This is the sixth note in the series and today we focus on a band out of Ohio that plays hard rock and light metal. The group currently consists of:
Silversyde released their first full length album in 2011 titled Circus Circus. The title track garnered a lot of popularity on iTunes, and I see why. The intro has a guitar line that causes heads to turn and listen, the drums beat hard and then Laura’s vocals come in with:
“I could only sit still for one moment
until you realized what I was saying to you
life is hard sometimes as you’ve realized
picking up the broken pieces tonight”
The song is a one on one conversation about God. The unique lyrical style is a talk/sing that is quite articulate and well-pronounced. It is a great sound. The drums continue in their assault on the track as the chorus drops:
“A fool says in his own heart
I’m giving up and there is no God
all your life you’ve played that card in this Circus Circus
life is hard and there will be pain
but nothing ventured is nothing gained never wanted to stay
the same in this Circus, Circus now”
Circus Circus gives hope to those who are hurting. Giving the truth that life is hard, there is going to be pain. But the last line of the song rings true to all who listen:
“You’re searching, running hiding from the One
who’ll make thing right
open up your eyes”
With that encouragement for all to hear, plus it is a great guitar driven song that gives the drums a huge place to let loose and a bass line that kept my ear ringing, I had to chat with Silversyde.
I emailed Silversyde a few questions to which they graciously responded:
Musikstry: When did you all come together and start making music?
Silversyde: Silversyde first started in 2009 as an official touring band. It was founded by (lead singer) Laura and her sister Ali (original rhythm guitarist). Members have come and gone through the years due to the high demands that touring takes on members and their families. The current lineup was assembled July-September of 2013 and we are having a blast writing, recording and performing our new album that is due out in March 2014.
Musikstry: What does your name, Silversyde, mean?
Silversyde: Overall, Silversyde’s motto has been of hope and healing, but the original meaning came from the idea that through life’s darkest challenges God’s love and grace shine through the darkness like a ray of light breaking through the storm cloud.
Musikstry: Wow! That’s cool and full of truth. Who are your influences?
Silversyde: Our musical influences include the following: Red, Breaking Benjamin, Shinedown, Chevelle and 30 Seconds To Mars.
Musikstry: I get the Chevelle and Red in your music. Do you believe it is important to be known as a Christian band? Why or why not?
Silversyde: We do not believe that as a “Christian” band you need to label yourselves in a way that may ward off the primary audience that we are going for: the lost. We have our band specifically going into venues and concerts that a lot of others would not feel comfortable or “called” to be in. Our theory is this: when Jesus walked the earth He didn’t go around proclaiming He was a “Christian” and that He could only minister inside a church setting. He purposefully went to those whom no one else would associate with and showed them love and their lives were changed by the conviction they felt through the Holy Spirit. We freely share our faith and message of hope regardless of what venue we are playing and we have found that promoting ourselves as a “hard rock band” instead of a “Christian hard rock band” gets us into venues that may otherwise pass us up. It’s a personal decision that we have consciously made after praying about how we should market ourselves. It works for us and God is moving through our ministry. Our methods may not be for everyone but regardless our end goal is the same: to spread the Word.
Musikstry: That is a very thought out response. I think it is clear that God is working in your ministry. If that is what God has called you to, then you have to follow His lead, kudos. How would you classify yourselves in the music industry?
Silversyde: We are constantly learning and growing in this industry. We have a lot of work to do and the second we feel that we’ve “arrived” is the day we should reevaluate where we are as a band, business and a ministry and look at areas we can improve/change to further our calling. Ultimately we would classify ourselves as growing!
Musikstry: I have not heard that before. But that is definitely a great frame of mind to be in as a person, let alone a band. What are your goals as a band?
Silversyde: Our goals as a band is to continue working to make this our career and ultimate source of our income while walking in the gifts that God has given us. We all plan to be playing and traveling for many years and focus on helping everyone we meet.
Musikstry: As a fan, I like that answer. What is the best concert you have ever been to?
Musikstry: What is the story behind Can’t Let Go?
Silversyde: Can’t Let Go is about the discovery of God’s amazing love for us and how He fought for us.
Musikstry: What is next on the horizon for Silversyde?
Silversyde: Next on our agenda is the long awaited release of our second full length album “Casting Shadows” in March 2014. We have a lot of tours coming up as well as the one we are currently on. We are excited at the plans that God has for us and keep trusting Him for unveiling His plan for us.
Musikstry: I remember you guys did a paypal donation fundraiser for the new album, how did that go?
Silversyde: Our fundraiser went pretty well. We didn’t quite make our goal within the time frame but God is providing for us.
Musikstry: Can people still donate?
Silversyde: People can still participate.
Musikstry: What is your favorite meal?
Silversyde: In the band it’s a tie between Mexican and seafood for our favorite meal.
Musikstry: Thanks for doing this. See you all soon.
Pretty exciting stuff from Silversyde. As they said they have a tour coming up. That tour hits Las Vegas on Mother’s Day weekend, Friday, May 9th at Eagle Aerie hall (310 W. Pacific Avenue, Henderson, Nevada 89015). Tickets are $10 presale and $12 at the door. The show is at 5pm. I am looking forward to this concert and Silversyde’s new album “Casting Shadows”.
This band’s testimony is one for all to hear, and for us to back them in their mission. Head to their facebook page and start following them. Look for their new album Casting Shadows out this month, and remember Silversyde will be in the Vegas Valley in May. Until next week, I love you Vegas, and all our neighbors. -Travis Musikstry (Joshua 1:8-9)
